The self-made restaurant in Da Bia.
Da Bia Village is an address for tourists who want to explore and experience the life of the highlanders in general and the Muong Ao Ta people in particular. Coming here, visitors can feel the peace and quiet, breathe the fresh, cool air of the primeval mountains and forests, watch the white clouds floating on the mountain tops, listen to the sounds of birds and animals echoing throughout the land and sky… Besides, visitors can ride a bicycle or walk to visit the village, visit and study the ancient stilt houses that have remained intact despite many generations; sit and talk with the village elders and village chiefs whose hair is white but their minds are still clear, their limbs are still strong, listen to them share about the lives of the people here to see that they live simply but happily.
Coming to Da Bia village, visitors can also participate in water games such as rafting, kayaking, waterfall bathing, wading in streams, and exploring caves. After the experiential activities, visitors can relax and soak in the cool water and enjoy rustic dishes, specialties of a mountainous countryside. The dishes here are mainly “self-sufficient” with free-range chickens, free-range pigs, Da River fish, steamed wild vegetables…, prepared according to local methods with the aroma of Doi seeds, the sweetness of giang bamboo shoots, the bitterness of wild vegetables… All are clean foods prepared by the skillful hands of the men who are the pillars of the Muong Ao Ta family. Here, men often go into the kitchen and prepare the dishes, women only help and prepare the performances, wearing charming Muong costumes to serve guests staying at home. Notably, only Ban Da Bia still maintains a cultural beauty that many places cannot preserve, which is Quan Tu Giac, this restaurant was built to buy, sell and exchange products that people in the village make and do not use up. It is called “Quan Tu Giac” because the shop does not need a sales person, people come to buy products and choose and pay for them in the basket according to the listed price. This is a unique traditional cultural feature that needs to be preserved and developed because it shows a very high level of community cohesion, people do not compete, jostle, do not greedily take other people’s things as their own…
The kind-hearted women of Muong Ao Ta.
In addition to speaking their own ethnic language and the Kinh ethnic group, most women, young people and children in the village can also speak English and French. They have not been trained in any training classes, but mainly self-study and communicate with tourists.
With the guidance and support of the AFAP Project and the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Hoa Binh, Da Bia village has built a civilized and attractive tourism environment. The Da Bac district community tourism management board has issued a code of conduct for visitors: do not buy goods or use services from street vendors who solicit and lure tourists; do not buy or sell products from hunting or deforestation; respect local customs and practices… If you want to stay overnight in Da Bia, visitors can choose ancient stilt houses. The stilt house is a common living space of the Muong people, so there are no private rooms, guests will be arranged in separate rooms with curtains. Each person is equipped with a mattress, pillow, blanket, mosquito net and a small bamboo lamp at the bedside.
In Da Bia, the best atmosphere is in the evening and early morning. Sitting on bamboo chairs right next to the stilt house, feel the fresh, cool air. In the morning, people can wake up early to walk around the village, see the misty clouds covering the mountains, watch the people fishing, enjoy the fresh air of the lake. At night, in Da Bia village, there are few lights, visitors can leisurely watch the stars or join in the songs and dances of the people. All create a peaceful, relaxing time, recharging visitors’ energy after daily fatigue and busyness.
